Re-Wiring and Cabling Systems

Re-Wire

A home rewire is the process of replacing all old electrical wiring with a new, up to electrical code system, including cables, sockets, switches, and the consumer unit. It's a comprehensive job that improves safety, meets current regulations, and can increase your home's value. The work typically involves a "first fix" (running new cables) and a "second fix" (installing fixtures). Whilst it can be disruptive, as it often requires cutting into walls and floors, we can help minimise this and guide you through the whole process. One thing we are proud of is our communication with our customers, it's not just at the initial call or meeting, we will be informing you of what's going on and what to expect throughout the re-wire.

A home rewire can include;

  • Replacing all existing wiring: Old, outdated, or damaged wires are completely replaced with new ones.

  • Installing a new consumer unit: The fuse board is updated to a new, safe, modern consumer unit.

  • Running new cabling: New cables are run through walls, floors, and ceilings to create new circuits for power and lighting.

  • Installing new fittings: New back boxes, sockets, switches, and light fittings are installed.

  • Upgrading to new technology: It's a good opportunity to add new wiring for things like smart lighting, home networks, CCTV, and smart home devices.

It can sometimes feel a little overwhelming when you first start thinking about this process, however, we will break it down for you and make the re-wire as easy for you as possible. At the end of the day, we are working on your home, we understand it can be stressful and upsetting. Don't worry, we will treat it as if it was our own and are respectful and professional throughout, from start to finish.

The two-stage process comprises of the first fix and second fix.

  • First fix:

This is the most disruptive stage where we create access to the existing wiring. We will remove old cables and install new ones, back boxes, and circuits.

  • Second fix:

Once the new cables are in place and walls/floors are repaired, we will return to install the final accessories like sockets, switches, and light fittings.

We can explain this in more detail for you during our initial conversation and put you in contact with other trades where needed.

Other information you may find useful;

Why you might need a home re-wire;

  • Safety: To eliminate fire and electric shock hazards associated with old wiring.

  • Regulations: To ensure the electrical system complies with current safety standards, such as BS 7671 Wiring Regulations.

  •  Increased capacity: To handle the demands of modern appliances and technology.

  • Selling your home: To increase the property's value and for a new buyer's peace of mind.

What to possibly expect;

  • Disruption:

The process involves an element of noise, dust, and potentially lifting floorboards or chasing out walls. As we are working on your electrical system you will be without electricity during a majority of the day. We do however leave you with certain circuits available each evening and even have ways to give you access to internet during when we've left site for the night.

  • A rough idea on timeframe:

An average three-bedroom house might take around two weeks for a re-wire.

  • Certification of work:

After all the work is completed, you will receive an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) to prove the new system is safe and compliant. This is a necessity in the UK following major work or changes to your system.

Cabling Systems

Cabling systems form the physical framework that facilitates the transmission of data, voice, and video signals within a building structure, be that a home or business.

They are primarily divided into two main types:

  • Cabling, which extends from telecommunications rooms to workstations.

  • backbone cabling, which links these rooms to the main equipment of the building.

A structured cabling system ensures a standardised infrastructure that enhances reliability, scalability, and overall performance.
